About Alienated
Alienated is an interdisciplinary dance company founded by Kelly Vanneste. At present, Alienated consists of Kelly Vanneste and Martijn Schipper. Kelly Vanneste is the choreographer responsible for the artistic direction, while Martijn is responsible for the business and production activities.
Alienated is derived from the word “alien,” which stands for alienation. Alienation is characteristic of our work, in which we place the body in a different context by working with objects. We do this by combining dance with the technique of object manipulation. This is a technique in which the performer uses and transforms an object to create images and shapes. The fusion of these two art forms, combined with music and visual elements, makes our work interdisciplinary.
We do not work with standard circus objects such as rings or clubs; we work with everyday objects and take them out of their normal context. The images we create with our work play with the symbolism of the body and the object, allowing the viewer to see them in a new light.
We do not see the object as a static decoration; we see it as an entity and dance partner. The connection and relationship between the object and the performer is one of the most important elements for us. By working with objects in this way, we limit the body, which is interesting to us. It allows us to explore new and different possibilities, always pushing the boundaries of what is physically possible.

About Kelly
Kelly Vanneste
is a Belgian choreographer and performing artist based in Tilburg (NL). After her graduation from Fontys Dance Art in Context she soon founded her performing arts company Aleniated |Performance Art|. In parallel she has been collaborating with other international creators and companies like IB the Company (BE), Particles (NL) and Corpo Maquina (NL). In her choreographic works at Alienated she has been researching the relation between elements on stage through object – body manipulation. By using various techniques of dance and acrobatics Alienated is exploring and pushing towards unique possibilities of the body and its physical boundaries.
About Martijn
Martijn graduated from the Fontys Dance Academy in Tilburg in 2022. During and after his education, he worked with various companies and choreographers, such as SALLY Maastricht, Isabelle Beernaert, Lonneke van Leth Dans, and Andreas Hannes.
In addition to being a dancer, Martijn has always been interested in entrepreneurship. Organizing and setting things up come naturally to him and bring him joy. That’s why it was a logical step for him to also work for cultural organizations alongside dancing. In 2022, he started working as an Office Manager and marketer at DansBrabant and works as a marketer for RIDCC.
Since early 2022, Martijn has also been working for Alienated. What started as informal conversations about the company has now grown into a close collaboration between Martijn and Kelly. He is responsible for business arrangements and ensures a smooth production process. He supports Kelly as a sounding board and is sometimes present to share his artistic knowledge with the performers.
